"Education is crucial to the rehabilitation of the offenders."

Wong Kan Seng
Minister for Home Affairs
Kaki Bukit Prison School Opening Speech
3 Jan 2000.

The Prison School was set up with the aim of improving inmates' educational qualifications, thereby socially leveling them up. This centralized education institution also enhanced the teaching capacity of the Prisons Department.

Rebuilding Lives and Awakening Hope

The move brought together the teaching resources of the Prisons Department in a conducive learning environment. A basic school infrastructure was provided where a structured school curriculum and regime could be facilitated. Within this special environment, the Prison School would promote a culture of continuous learning, self-discipline and self-motivation.

A rigorous all-rounded programme has been designed to rebuild the inmate in their academic and non-academic development. The syllabus includes academic and vocational courses. The school also offers students various opportunities to acquire life-skills and other social skills through participation in several other programmes.

Prison School Programmes

  • Certificate Courses aim to provide students with formal academic/vocational qualifications to give them a chance to further upgrade themselves or as a handle to gain better employment.
  • Enrichment Activities aim to provide students with social skills for their personal development. Students are given opportunities to develop their inter-personal, organization and communication skills through participation in committees and enrichment activities. More importantly, it helps them to adapt to life in and out of prison.
  • NYAA programme aims to encourage younger students to develop qualities of self-reliance, perseverance and sense of responsibility towards themselves and the community.
  • Family Involvement Programmes involve talks and workshops which are conducted to inform the students' families of crime matters and difficulties faced by the former and how they can play an important support role. Family members are also given opportunities to discuss their needs, the students' progress and plans during the various family involvement events.
  • Student-focused Programme encourages students to critically reflect on their lives. They are guided to set their own goals and to adopt a positive mindset and helpful behavior towards the attainment of their goals.
