Singapore Government Scholarship

The Singapore Government Scholarships (SGS) are awarded to academically outstanding students with dynamic leadership qualities for undergraduate studies at renowned overseas universities (English speaking countries). Upon graduation, the SGS scholar will embark on a challenging career as a Senior Prison Officer and oversees the safe custody, humane treatment and rehabilitation of offenders.

This is a rewarding and meaningful job for one who wishes to make a difference in helping offenders renew and restart their lives. He will also be presented with abundant opportunities to grow professionally and to acquire skills that will stand him in good stead in whatever challenges he takes on beyond the career.

Eligibility

  • Singapore Citizen or Singapore Permanent Resident;
  • For GCE 'A' Level - attempted at least 3 'A' level subjects and 1 'S' paper;
  • For Polytechnic Diploma holders - Diploma with Merit;
  • Good co-curricular activities (CCA) record;
  • Good level of physical fitness;
  • Good performance in NS for male candidates;
  • Strong leadership qualities, impeccable integrity and a strong interest in a career with the Home Team.

Value of Award

  • Monthly overseas maintenance allowance;
  • Tuition fees and other approved charges;
  • Annual return economy class air fare;
  • Annual book allowance;
  • Clothing allowance;
  • Computer allowance;
  • Settling-in allowance;
  • Excess baggage allowance.

Condition of Award

Successful recipients of the award are required to sign a service bond to serve the Prisons Department for 6 years.

Courses of Study

Local Merit Scholarship

The Local Merit Scholarships (LMS) are awarded to aspiring students with leadership potential to study at local universities. Whilst pursuing their undergraduate courses, LMS scholars will be sponsored for their participation in overseas Student Exchange Programmes. Upon graduation, they will be groomed to take on an exciting and fulfilling career as Senior Prison Officers, where they will oversee the safe custody, humane treatment and rehabilitation of offenders while developing their managerial and organisational skills.

The Singapore Prison Service is the place where the best and the able will not only have abundant opportunities to scale new heights in an environment of continuous learning but also find career satisfaction in helping offenders renew and restart their lives as responsible citizens.

Eligibility

  • Singapore Citizen or Singapore Permanent Resident;
  • For GCE 'A' Level - attempted at least 3 'A' level subjects and 1 'S' paper;
  • For Polytechnic Diploma holders - Diploma with Merit;
  • Good co-curricular activities (CCA) record;

  • Strong leadership qualities, impeccable integrity and a strong interest in a career with the Home Team.

Value of Award

  • Tuition fees will be fully paid;
  • Scholarship allowance of $5,500 per annum;
  • Hostel allowance (only room rates);
  • Computer Allowance of $350 for 1st year scholar;
  • Sponsorship for Overseas Student Exchange Programme or Summer Programme lasting 1-2 semesters (if selected by the university) - lump sum allowance comprising of airfare and maintenance allowance;
  • Sponsorship for approved CCA activities (e.g. community service or humanitarian-based programmes). MHA will pay half of the expenses subject to a maximum of $500 per scholar.

Condition of Award

Successful recipients of the award are required to sign a service bond to serve the Prisons Department for 4 years.
