Background

There are about 12,000 inmates in Singapore’s prisons. While they may come from different backgrounds, all share the same fate of having to pay a price for wrongs perpetrated against society. The crimes they have committed are known and well reported. But what is less known are their reasons for committing the offences.

In ‘The Untold Stories’, we feature true stories that reveal the workings of the criminal mind and the circumstances that led offenders to their sorry end. In these stories, you will find the offenders remarkably similar to people on the "outside". You will see in them the same fears, passion, anxieties and wants that we have. You will also identify with the human failings that have ensnared them. For greed and temptation are by no means the preserve of inmates. In every story, you will also notice the danger signs which had somehow slipped past the radar screen of parents and caregivers and went unrecognized and uncorrected.

We hope that through the stories, readers will learn to recognise these "red flags" for what they are and seek help if necessary. For we must never forget that our families and loved ones are as human as any of the 12,000 inmates in prison – and therefore just as vulnerable.

Please send us your feedback on how we could improve the stories or better benefit the readers.

** The names of persons and dates in the stories have been changed to protect the identities of the protagonists.
