Senior Prison Officer and Prison Officer

Is our job dangerous because we deal with inmates and drug addicts?

The Prison Staff Training school equips Prison officers with skills to handle difficult situations, without endangering ourselves or others.

The Senior Prison Officers and Prison Officers have to go through 37 & 32 weeks of residential training, respectively. This will be followed by on-the-job training for 8 weeks.

Our training includes:

Academic Training

You will be taught relevant legislation and the Prisons Standing Orders. You will also be trained in rehabilitation and counselling skills and learn about the security and operations of the institutions. You will also pick up additional skills like people management, leadership and computer skills.

Physical and Tactical Training

You will be trained to pass the various stations of the Individual Physical Proficiency Test (IPPT), such as the 2.4km run, sit-ups, shuttle run, etc.

As you're part of an organisation that has to keep inmates in safe custody, you will be trained in tactical and defensive tactics, eg. Crisis Support Training, Control and Restraint Techniques and Close Quarters Defense Techniques. Learning together in the field is an integral part of your training. This will help to build team spirit and esprit de corp among new trainees.

Training Bond

You will be required to sit and pass the exams (Academic, Tactical and Physical) at the end of the training and serve a 2-years training bond with the department upon completion of your training.

Developmental Courses

After graduating from basic training, you will also be sent for developmental courses to upgrade your skills. Promising officers will attend overseas seminars, workshops and courses.

Home Affairs Senior Executive (HASE)

Training

As training forms a core component of a Home Affairs Senior Executive’s career, all Home Affairs Senior Executives will undergo an induction course upon official appointment in order to equip them with the essential skills, knowledge and confidence to excel in their duties. Officers will also have the opportunity to plan their personal career road map together with the immediate supervisor, ensuring the path of their subsequent training. There will also be ample training opportunities (both local and overseas) for officers to continuously upgrade their skill sets and knowledge.

Career Development

In order to maximize each officer’s potential, all Home Affairs Senior Executives can expect to be exposed to various areas of work through regular postings. Officers with a track record of good performance and keen work aptitude can look forward to good advancement opportunities.
